The Met records Hokusai impression JP2972 as a woodblock print from about 1830–1832. It is a historical print; its catalogue record does not certify this commercial reproduction.

Hokusai’s name does not mean you are buying a period impression, an edition supervised by the artist or a museum-authorised reproduction. The historical image in our artwork guide helps you study the composition. It cannot establish the colour or sharpness of the canvas sold on Amazon.

For a planning exercise, suppose the listing’s nominal 55 cm were the outside width. Check that assumption before buying: a size label does not explain what was measured. Centred above hypothetical 90 cm furniture, it would leave 17.5 cm on either side; above 180 cm furniture, it would leave 62.5 cm on either side.

Our reading is that the first arrangement could make the image more prominent, while the second could leave it deliberately small. Neither is wrong because of a decorating formula. Try a template using the confirmed outer width and height, then view it from your usual seat. Being able to read the boats may matter more to you than filling the wall.

We do not know how much of the composition stays on the front and how much continues onto the sides. An outside measurement and a reference image cannot settle that question. We would request a straight-on front view, a side view and the visible printed-area dimensions. Compare the inscriptions, boats, Mount Fuji and the ends of the wave. We are not claiming that this variant is cropped or distorted.

• Does 55 × 40 cm refer to the outside of the stretcher or another measurement?
• Which part of the image is visible from the front? Do the sides repeat imagery or use part of the composition?
• Are an outer frame, glazing and hanging components included? Which fixing instructions come with the product?
• Can the seller provide a view of the actual finish and back of this variant?

The Canadian Conservation Institute describes a window mat as a separation between artwork and frame glazing. This is a framing function, not a verified feature of this canvas.

If you prefer to read The Great Wave as a print with a margin, we would explore paper with suitable framing before settling on canvas. If the object’s sides and less surrounding white space appeal to you, a stretcher is a reasonable direction to investigate. We have not physically compared both solutions and do not propose another ASIN as superior.

We keep this as a candidate for someone exploring a canvas presentation, not a quality recommendation. Before turning that candidate into a choice, we would establish the outside dimensions, front-image area and included mounting components. If colour accuracy, texture or print precision is your priority, this documentary research cannot answer those questions: evidence from a real unit is needed. Resemblance to a museum image is not a substitute.
