Editorial methodology
How we arrive at a recommendation.
OutsideCanvas separates research, visual judgment, product facts, and commercial links so that readers can see both the conclusion and the reasoning behind it.
1. Identity before opinion
We verify the exact Amazon listing and ASIN, then distinguish the physical product from the artwork it reproduces. If attribution or product identity is unclear, we state the uncertainty or do not publish.
2. Claims need a trail
A published review records at least two relevant sources and notes which claim each one supports. Museum, artist, catalogue, and other primary material is preferred for art context. Seller information is labelled as such.
3. Five evaluation dimensions
Context
Can we accurately identify the work, maker, period, and relevant visual history?
Object
Are the dimensions, substrate, printing method, finish, and included components clear?
Presence
How do scale, color, contrast, rhythm, and negative space behave in a room?
Fit
For which interiors, placements, light conditions, and viewing distances is it convincing?
Confidence
Which conclusions are observed, sourced, seller-reported, or still uncertain?
4. Rankings are question-specific
There is no universal “best art.” Each ranking names its use case, eligibility rules, comparison dimensions, and weighting. Editorial order cannot be purchased and is not determined by commission.
5. Corrections and change
Listings, materials, and availability can change. Every published page carries review dates; material corrections update the page and its evidence record. Price and stock are not copied into our content unless an approved, policy-compliant source keeps them current.
